Linking up with the NBN system

This article will explain how your home may be connected to the various NBNTM technologies, including any requirements for the installation of NBNTM equipment.

Fiber to the Premises, abbreviated FTTP

The endpoint of the fiber optic cable that will lead all the way to your property is the NBNTM Utility Box that will be mounted on an exterior wall.

The NBNTM Utility Box, also known as the Premises Connection Device, will be mounted on the exterior wall of your home, and it will connect to both the NBNTM Connection Box and the Power Supply Unit that has been installed inside.

Installation

If you don't already have the equipment described in the previous sentence, you'll need to have an NBNTM installer come to your location. During the entirety of the appointment, there must be a responsible adult present who is at least 18 years old.

The following are some suggestions to consider when selecting the location for the installation of your NBNTM equipment:

  • Within 1 within 5 meters of an available power outlet
  • In a private office or study, or in close proximity to any available phone jacks
  • A space that is air-conditioned, dry, and well-ventilated, but does not have any sinks or other sources of water
  • Away from crowded areas where it could be accidentally damaged or knocked over.
  • A location that is convenient for accessing the necessary equipment.
  • A location that will not undergo any significant changes in the near future

"Fibre to the Building" or "Fiber to the Node" (FTTB & FTTN)

Fiber optic cable will be run all the way up to the building's Main Distribution Frame (MDF), which is typically located in the building's basement or in a secure telecommunications cabinet. This is what is meant by "Fibre to the Building." Following that, the MDF will connect to the wall socket in your unit by way of the building's internal copper cabling system.

Connections that are Fiber to the Node are very similar to those, with the exception that the connection point is a node on your street or a street nearby. Copper cabling will connect the node to a wall socket within your premises. This connection will be made inside.

You will be able to continue to use the same wall socket that you have been using for your traditional copper phone handsets and/or your ADSL broadband connection.

Installation

The vast majority of the time, an NBNTM installer won't be necessary because the installation work will be carried out outside of your property. It may be necessary to check the connectivity to your premises in person at times, or if a new copper line or wall socket is required, attendance may be required.

The acronym "Fiber to the Curb" (FTTC)

A fiber optic cable will lead to a reverse-powered Distribution Point in your street, which could be located in a pit or on a pole close to the curb. Copper cabling will then connect to a wall socket located within your premises once it reaches that point. This copper cabling may first go through the building's Main Distribution Frame (MDF), which is typically located in the basement or in a locked telecommunications cabinet, in multi-dwelling units such as apartment complexes.

You will continue to use the same wall socket for your NBNTM Connection Box as you have in the past for your traditional copper phone handsets and/or ADSL broadband connection. If you want to set up a WiFi network in your home, you can do so by connecting your iiNet modem to your NBNTM Connection Box.

Installation

The vast majority of the time, an NBNTM installer won't be necessary because the installation work will be carried out outside of your property. It may be necessary to check the connectivity to your premises in person at times, or if a new copper line or wall socket is required, attendance may be required.

NBNTM Wireless Network

A wireless signal is transmitted from your neighborhood NBNTM Wireless tower and picked up by an antenna that is permanently mounted on your home's roof.

Your NBNTM Connection Box will need to be plugged into a specific wall outlet, which will be connected to your NBNTM Outdoor antenna that is mounted on your roof.

  • A room that is nice and cool, dry, and well-ventilated, but does not have any sinks or other water outlets.
  • Keep it away from crowded places where it could get knocked over or damaged.
  • A location that is convenient for accessing the necessary equipment.
  • A location in which you do not intend to perform any significant structural alterations.

NBN™ HFC

A node in your street or a street nearby will be connected to a fiber optic cable. The node will be connected via coaxial cabling (specifically, Hybrid Fibre Coaxial, hence the abbreviation "HFC") to a Premises Connection Device that will be mounted on the exterior wall of your location. This will connect to a wall socket located on the interior of your premises.

Your Premises Connection Device will be connected to an internal wall socket via internal coaxial wiring, which will run from your Premises Connection Device. You will be able to continue to use the same wall socket that you have been using for your cable broadband or pay television service. If you have a pay television service that is delivered over cable, the wall socket will be outfitted with a cable splitter. This will allow one port to be used for your NBNTM Connection Box, and the other port will be used for your pay television service. If you want to set up a WiFi network in your home, you can do so by connecting your iiNet Cable Gateway to your NBNTM Connection Box.

Installation

The vast majority of the time, an NBNTM installer won't be necessary because the installation work will be carried out outside of your property. It may be necessary to check the connectivity to your premises in person at times, or if a new copper line or wall socket is required, attendance may be required.

NBN™ Satellite

Sky MusterTM is a geostationary satellite that is located in orbit above Australia and provides power to the NBNTM LTSS (Long Term Satellite Service). Sky MusterTM is a service that sends a signal between a satellite dish that is permanently installed at your location and the NBNTM Satellite base station.

From the satellite dish that is installed on your roof or gutter, internal wiring will run to a wall socket located somewhere inside your business. This wall socket will be used to connect your NBNTM Satellite Connection Box to the network. Through the use of an Ethernet cable, it is possible to link a single computer to your Connection Box. Alternatively, you may choose to link a WiFi router in order to link multiple devices through both Ethernet and WiFi.

Installation

If you do not already have NBNTM LTSS Satellite equipment installed at your address, you will need to have a technician from NBNTM come to your location to perform the installation. During the actual installation, there must be an adult present who is at least 18 years old.

The installer will conduct a survey of your property to locate an area on your land that is suitable for the installation of your satellite dish. In the event that an installation that is not considered standard is required (for example, a g a free-standing mount with cabling that leads back to your premises) then the installer will be able to provide you with a quote for any additional costs that might be incurred, should they be necessary.

Services for telecommunications on the NBNTM

Please be aware that if you choose to use a modem that is not supplied by us, you will NOT have access to the complimentary NBNTM Phone (VoIP) service or any calls that are complimentary with that service.

IiNet is no longer offering the Home Phone landline service to its customers. We are able to investigate the possibility of transferring your current landline number to a VoIP service if you already have a landline number in your possession.
