Learn to Read That Meter

There is a one-of-a-kind meter number assigned to each and every electric meter, in addition to a National Meter Identifier, also known as an NMI, which is used by the meter service provider to identify the meter. Your NMI can also be located on your most recent bill.  

The reading that should be entered into this meter is: 07628

• Proceed clockwise around each dial, reading from left to right.
• In cases where the dial is between two numbers, the lower number should be used. If the dial is somewhere between 9 and 0, consider this to be a 9.
• If the dial is currently sitting directly on a number, proceed to the dial to the right. If this number has not yet passed 0, the original dial has not yet been passed, and you should use the lower number instead. If this number has passed 0, then the original dial has been passed.

This meter gives the following reading: 09377

• To view the readings on the meter, you must first press the button labeled "display."
• Include all of the numbers that are displayed, including any zeros that come before the numbers that are relevant.

Every gas meter has something called a Meter Installation Reference Number, or MIRN for short. This number is what the company that services the meters uses to identify each meter. Your MIRN is also included on the bottom of your bill.

Odometer meter types

This meter gives the following reading: 00369

• Enter all of the digits, starting with the leftmost zero, working your way to the right.
• If the dial display is between two numbers, the lower number should be the one that is recorded.
• Ignore all of the numbers that are written in red following the decimal point.

This meter gives the following reading: 070978

• Enter all of the digits, starting with the leftmost zero and working your way to the right.  
• If the dial display is between two numbers, the lower number should be the one that is recorded.
• You need to enter the first four numbers, including the first two red numbers.

Digital gas meter types

This meter gives the following reading: 00000142 1

• LCD screen display: If the screen is black, pressing the red button will bring it back to life.
• Enter all of the digits, starting from the left, making sure to include any leading zeros.  
• If there are no leading zeros on your hot water meter, you should enter all of the digits from left to right, excluding the digit that is located in the far rightmost position. In this particular illustration, you would disregard the last four that are displayed.  

The amount of electricity consumed over short periods of time can be read off of a smart meter, which can also be accessed remotely. Because of this, if you have a meter that can be read remotely, it is not necessary for a meter reader to come out to your property in order to obtain a reading.

Because you can access and view the information about your usage through My Account if you have a smart meter, it is much simpler for you to keep track of and manage how much electricity you consume. This cannot be provided by a conventional meter. You can create an account for My Account right here if you haven't done so already.

There are two varieties of smart meters: those that are read manually and those that are read remotely.

Smart meters that can be read remotely

There is typically no need for a technician to come out to your home in order to collect usage information from smart meters that can be remotely read because the data is transmitted directly to the meter service provider or distributor.

My Account gives you the ability to view your usage on an hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, and annual basis if you have a remotely readable smart meter. This is only possible if sufficient usage history has been accumulated. Within three days of the time of consumption, all of the data relating to usage can be viewed.

Perform manual readings on interval meters.

These meters are unable to be read remotely, so the meter service provider or distributor will have to come to your location in order to physically download the data from your meter. In the event that you have been provided with an estimate of your bill and would like to schedule a reading, please get in touch with us.

In spite of the fact that these meters cannot be read remotely, you can still use "My Account" to monitor your consumption on an hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, and even annual basis (provided that sufficient usage history is available). Once the meter has been read by your meter provider or Distributor, all of the usage data will be updated and made available to view within 72 hours of the reading.
