How to Make a Challan (CRN) in Microsoft Word

All of the users have access to the service of generating challan forms using the CRN number. You will be able to generate a Challan Form (CRN) with this service, and then you will be able to make a tax payment for a selected Assessment Year and type of tax payment (Minor Head).  

Users who make use of this service are:

  • Everyone Who Pays Taxes
  • ERI and CA of Types 1 and 2, respectively
  • Representative Candidate for Assessment
  • Taxpayers and those who collect taxes

2. The requirements necessary to make use of this service
 

You have the option of generating a Challan Form (CRN) either through the pre-login facility (i.e., before logging into the e-Filing portal) or the post-login facility (i.e., after logging into the e-Filing portal).

  • PAN/TAN that is both valid and active before you log in
  • User who is registered on the e-Filing portal and has a valid user ID and password (after logging in)

3. Step-by-Step Guide

3.1 After successfully logging in, generate the challan form (CRN).

First thing you need to do is enter your user ID and password into the e-Filing portal.

Click e-File > e-Pay Tax on the Dashboard, which is Step 2 of the process. You are able to view the specifics of your previously saved drafts, generated challans, and payment history on the e-Pay Tax page.

Step 3: In order to generate a new Challan Form (CRN), navigate to the e-Pay Tax page and click the New Payment option.

Step 4: On the New Payment page, select a tax payment tile that corresponds to you and click the Proceed button.

Note: In the event that you are unsure of the category, you can locate the category that applies to your tax payment by clicking on the tab labeled "Find your tax payment category."

You will have access to a variety of payment options, depending on the category you choose, including the following:

For taxpayers who hold a Permanent Account Number (Depending on the Type of Taxpayer)
  • Taxes on income (including Advance Tax, Self-Assessment Tax, and so on) )
  • Taxes on corporations (including Advance Tax, Self-Assessment Tax, and so on) )
  • Insist on payment in the form of the Regular Tax Assessment (400).
  • Equalisation levy, Securities Transactions Tax (STT), Commodities Transaction Tax (CTT), and Dividend Distribution Tax (DTT) all fall under this category.
  • Charges and All Other Payments
  • (Tax Deducted Upon the Sale of a Property) Form 26QB
  • Make a Demand for Payment of the TDS on the Property
  • 26QC (tax collected on rental income from property)
  • Demand that the tenant pay the tax deduction on the rent.
  • 26QD is shorthand for "tax deducted at source on payments made to resident contractors and professionals."
  • Demand payment for tax withholding on payments made to resident professionals and contractors.
For TAN holder
  • Pay TDS/TCS
  • Make payment (either for the appeal fee or any other fee).


Step 5: Once the appropriate Tax Payment tile has been selected, enter the information required according to the table below, and then click Continue.

  • Make your selection from the list of Demand Reference Numbers (DRNs) that are currently available. You have the option to search using the DRN, or you can filter by the Assessment Year.  
4 Equalization Levy
  • Choose the appropriate fiscal year from the list of drop-down options.
  • Choose the Type of Payment that corresponds to the Minor Head from the drop-down menu.
5 Taxes on the Transaction of Commodities, Taxes on the Transaction of Securities, and Taxes on the Distribution of Dividends
  • Choose the appropriate evaluation year from the list that drops down.
  • Choose the Type of Payment that corresponds to the Minor Head from the drop-down menu.
6 Payments (Fees and Others)
  • Choose the kind of tax that applies to your situation from the menu that drops down.
  • Choose the appropriate evaluation year from the list that drops down.
  • Choose the Type of Payment that corresponds to the Minor Head from the drop-down menu.
7 26QB is the Tax Deduction on the Sale of Property.
  • On the page labeled "Add Seller Details," you will be asked to provide the seller with their Residential Status, PAN, Name, Address, and Contact Details.
  • On the Add Property Transferred Details page, enter the following information: the Type of Property, the Address details (of the transferred property), and the agreement details.
Note: 
  • Before you can submit Form 26QB, you are required to have knowledge of both the buyer and the seller's valid PAN numbers. It is necessary to fill out multiple 26QB forms in the event that multiple sellers are involved.
  • If the seller is a non-resident, they do not need to fill out this form.
8 The 26QC, also known as the "TDS on Rent of Property"
  • On the page labeled "Add Tenant Details," you will be asked to provide the tenant's Residential Status, PAN, Name, Address, and Contact Details.
  • On the page labeled "Add Landlord Details," you will be asked to provide the Seller's Residential Status, PAN, Name, Address, and Contact Details.
  • On the Add Property Rented Details page, you will need to provide information regarding the Type of Property, the Address details (of the rented property), and the agreement details.
Note: The TDS rate may be applied in accordance with the provisions of the Income Tax Act of 1961 if you are unable to provide the landlord's PAN details. It is necessary to fill out multiple 26QC forms in the event that there are multiple tenants or landlords. 9 26QD is short for the tax withholding form "TDS on Payment to Resident Contractors and Professionals."
  • On the page labeled "Add Deductor Details," you will be asked to provide the deductor with their Residential Status, PAN, Name, Address, and Contact Details.
  • On the page labeled "Add Deductee Details," you will be asked to provide the deductee's Residential Status, PAN, Name, Address, and Contact Details.
  • On the page labeled "Add Deduction Details," enter the specifics of the agreement as well as the nature of the payment.
Note: The TDS rate that may be charged to you will be determined by the provisions of the Income Tax Act of 1961 if you are unable to provide the deductee's PAN details. 10 Make a demand for payment of the property tax deductions.
  • Please enter the PAN of the purchaser here.
  • Please provide the Personal Identification Number of the Seller.
  • Simply type in the acknowledgement number.
  • Choose the Evaluation Year option.
11 Demand for the Collection of TDS on Rental Income
  • Input the PAN number of the Landlord here.
  • Enter the Tenant's Permanent Account Number
  • Simply type in the acknowledgement number.
  • Choose the Evaluation Year option.
12 Request Payment for Tax Deducted at Source on Payments Made to Resident Contractors and Professionals
  • Input the PAN number of the Landlord here.
  • Enter the Tenant's Permanent Account Number
  • Simply type in the acknowledgement number.
  • Choose the Evaluation Year option.
13 Make a payment of TDS (this option is only available to TAN users). Choose the Type of Payment (Minor Head) from the drop-down menu of available options, or narrow your search using the Section of the Income Tax Act, 1961 that is relevant to your situation. 14 Outstanding Demand Choose a DRN from the list that's currently at your disposal. You have the option to search using the DRN, or you can filter by the Assessment Year. 15 Pay Fees
  • Choose the Type of Payment (Minor Head) from the drop-down menu of available options.

Step 6: On the page titled "Add Tax Breakup Details," enter the breakdown of the total tax payment amount, and then click the Continue button.

Note that the sum of the break-up must be an amount that is NOT ZERO.

Step 7 requires that you choose the method of payment that will be utilized for the transaction that is going to take place. As will be seen in the following section, there are five different methods of payment available.

Note that after a payment mode has been selected for a Challan Form and a Challan Reference Number (CRN) has been generated for it, the payment mode cannot be changed at a later time during the payment process.  

Step 8a: For payments to be made through the Internet Banking services (of banks that have been authorized).


A On the page labeled "Select Payment Mode," choose "Net Banking" from the menu, and then choose "Bank Name" from the list of available options. (If the name of your bank is not displayed as one of the radio options, select it from the dropdown menu that is labeled Other Bank.) After making your selection, click the Continue button.

Please take note that only Authorized Banks have access to this facility. In the event that your financial institution is not an authorized financial institution, you have the option of paying your taxes via RTGS, NEFT, or a payment gateway.

C Click the "Submit to Bank" button after you have read and agreed to the terms and conditions. (You will be taken to the website of the chosen bank, where you will be able to sign into your account and complete the transaction. )

Following the completion of a successful transaction, a notification of success will be shown. You are able to save a copy of the Challan Receipt on your computer for your records. On the e-Pay Tax page, the menu labeled "Payment History" will provide you with access to information regarding any payments that have been processed.

Step 8 (b): If you would like to make your payment with a Debit Card (from an Authorized Bank)
 

A: In the menu labeled "Debit Card," choose the Bank Name from the list of available options, then click the Continue button.

B: On the page where you make and preview payments, check that the payment details and tax breakdown details are correct, then click the Pay Now button.

C: After reading the terms and conditions and selecting them, click the "Submit to Bank" button. (You will be redirected to the website of the bank that you have chosen, where he can make the payment using his debit card by entering the necessary information. )

Following the completion of a successful transaction, a notification of success will be shown. You are able to save the Challan Receipt on your computer for use in the future. On the e-Pay Tax page, the menu labeled "Payment History" will provide you with access to information regarding any payments that have been processed.

Step 8 (c): For payments to be made at the bank counter, select "Pay at the Bank Counter."
 

A Choose whether you would like to pay with cash, a check, or a demand draft from the menu labeled "Pay at the Bank Counter."

Note: 

  • Cash payments of more than 10,000 are not permitted in this case.
  • According to Notification 34/2008 issued by the CBDT, a taxpayer that is either a company or a person (other than a company) to whom the provisions of section 44AB of the Income-tax Act of 1961 apply cannot use this mode. This restriction was put in place to prevent taxpayers from abusing the system.

B On the page where you can preview and download the challan form, check that the payment details and tax breakdown details are correct, then click the Continue button.

C The successfully generated Challan Form along with the Challan Reference Number (CRN) will be displayed on the page that instructs the user to Visit Bank to Make a Payment. You can make your payment at the local branch of the authorized bank of your choice after downloading and printing the Challan form.

Step 8 (d): If you want to make a payment using RTGS or NEFT (this option is available at any bank that offers it), click here.


A If you choose RTGS or NEFT as your method of payment, then click the Continue button.

B On the page where you can preview and download the mandate form, check that the payment details and tax break up details are correct, then click the Continue button.

C The successfully generated Mandate Form along with the Challan Reference Number (CRN) will be displayed on the Pay Now / Visit Bank to Make Payment page after the form has been submitted. After the CRN and the Mandate Form have been generated, you have the option of either physically going to the bank with the Mandate Form in order to complete the tax payment or using the Internet Banking facility of the bank at which you already have an account in order to finish the transaction.

Note: 

  1. Any bank in India can be used to process NEFT and RTGS payments. You are strongly encouraged to check with the bank about the availability of the NEFT and RTGS facilities.
  2. NEFT and RTGS charges may be imposed according to the guidelines established by the RBI and the policies of the bank; these charges will be in addition to the tax amount.  


For payments made through the Payment Gateway (using a Debit Card, Credit Card, Net-banking, or UPI), proceed to Step 8(e).


A: In the menu labeled "Payment Gateway," choose the Payment Gateway method, and then click the Continue button.

B: On the page where you preview and make payments, double check the information regarding the payment and the tax breakdown, and then click the Pay Now button.

C: Click the "Submit to Bank" button after reading and agreeing to the terms and conditions. (You will be redirected to the website of the chosen payment gateway, where you will be able to log in using your existing credentials or enter your debit card/credit card/UPI information in order to complete the transaction)

Note:

  • In accordance with the Bank's Terms and Conditions and the RBI's Guidelines pertaining to this topic, the fees and service charges that are incurred in order to pay taxes using the Payment Gateway mode will be imposed. It is important to emphasize that the e-Filing Portal and the Income Tax Department do not impose any fees of this kind. This charge or fee will be paid to the bank or Payment Gateway, and it will be in addition to the amount of tax due. However, in accordance with the directives issued by the government, no such fees or MDR charges will be imposed on transactions carried out using a Debit Card powered by RuPay, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) (BHIM-UPI), and the Unified Payments Interface Quick Response Code (UPI QR Code) (BHIM-UPI QR Code).
  • Under no circumstances should any taxpayer be permitted to file a chargeback claim against the Income Tax Department. You are strongly encouraged to make a claim for a tax credit in the amount stated above when you submit your income tax return for the applicable Assessment Year. On the other hand, if the bank permits it, you are able to file a chargeback claim with the respective bank, and that bank may then process the claim in accordance with the applicable guidelines outlined by the RBI that govern chargeback claims.

D: A notification of success will be shown after the successful completion of the transaction. You are able to save the Challan Receipt on your computer for use in the future. On the e-Pay Tax page, the menu labeled "Payment History" will provide you with access to information regarding any payments that have been processed.

3.2 Make a Challan Form (CRN) (Before You Log In)
 

Step 1: Navigate to the homepage of the e-Filing portal and click the e-Pay Tax button.

Step 2: On the e-Pay Tax page, enter your PAN or TAN, then enter it again in the textbox labeled "Confirm PAN or TAN," and then enter your mobile number (which you should have available). Simply click the Continue button.

Step 3: On the OTP Verification page, enter the 6-digit OTP that was sent to the mobile number that was entered in Step 2, and then click the Continue button.

Note:

  • The OTP will only be valid for a period of 15 minutes.
  • You have a total of three chances to input the correct OTP.
  • The on-screen OTP expiration countdown timer will tell you when the OTP will no longer be valid.
  • When the Resend OTP button is pressed, a fresh OTP will be generated and sent.

Step 4: A success message that includes the PAN/TAN and Name that you entered will be displayed after the OTP has been verified. To carry on, select the Continue option.

Step 5: On the e-Pay Tax page, select a tax payment category that corresponds to you and click the Proceed button.

Step 6: Repeat Steps 5 through 8 in accordance with Section 3 1 Post Your Login and Create Your Challan Form (CRN)  

Note:

  • While you are entering your information using the pre-login service, you will not be able to save a draft of the Challan Form (CRN).  
  • The information that you enter will only be accessible for as long as the page is currently active.  
  • After logging in, you will need to select the option to "Create Challan Form (CRN)" in order to save a draft. Refer to the Third Section 1 Learn more by Creating a Challan (After Logging In).


3.3 Make a Challan Form (CRN) After Logging In (Post-Login, Type-1 and Type-2 ERI)
 

The first thing you need to do is enter your user ID and password into the e-Filing portal.

Step 2: On your Dashboard, navigate to the e-File menu and then click e-Pay Tax. After clicking this button, you will be brought to the e-Pay Tax page. Click the Continue button after entering the PAN or TAN of the taxpayer on whose behalf you wish to generate a challan form (CRN).  


After entering your PAN or TAN, proceed to Step 3 and continue through Step 8 in accordance with section 3. 1 Create Challan Form (CRN) (Post Login) is the section of the user manual for Create Challan Form (CRN).  

Note:

  • Payments can be made offline or online for type 1 ERIs, and they'll be able to do both.
  • Only offline transactions will be available for Type 2 ERIs to complete.


3.4 Make a challan using the CRN number (after logging in as the representative assessee).
 

The first thing you need to do is enter your user ID and password into the e-Filing portal.

Step 2: Once you have logged in, enter the Permanent Account Number (PAN) of the assessee you are representing.  


Step 3: On the Dashboard of the particular assessee that you have chosen, navigate to the e-File menu and then click e-Pay Tax. After clicking this button, you will be brought to the e-Pay Tax page. You are able to view the specifics of your previously saved drafts, generated challans, and payment history on the e-Pay Tax page.
