Guide to APA 7th Referencing Style Figures Including Graphs and Images in Library Guides.
An element labeled as a figure describes any depiction or illustration that is non-textual, including photographs, charts, drawings, graphs, or other kinds of graphic or visual aids. Anything that is not a table is identified as a figure.
The figure components include a number, which begins with Figure, followed by a numeric identifier (e.g. Figure 1). This identifier is written in bold font without a period. A title is then presented below the number, which is written in Italics with capitalization in Title Case format without a period. The image of the figure itself is what represents the chart, graph, photograph, drawing, or illustration. A legend or key, if provided, describes any symbols that were used in the image of the figure. Whenever instructions or details that cannot be evaluated from the title, image, or legend alone are required, a note can be included beneath the figure. This note may include variables such as abbreviations or copyright information, if necessary. Notes are left-aligned and not italicized, beginning with "Note" and ending with a period. In case the figure is not an original and derived from another source, reference data is included in the notes area, which includes copyright attribution if required.
When referring to any figure, use its number without italics, but writing "Figure" with a capital "F" in the text, such as "As demonstrated in Figure 1, ..." There are two alternatives for figure placement in a document, with the first alternative being to position all figures on individual pages following the reference list. The second alternative is embedding each figure within the text. Whenever reproducing or adapting a figure from another source, like an online picture, include a reference list entry for the work and a copyright attribution in the figure note, indicating the origin of the material you have adapted or reproduced. Use a permission statement for reproduced or adapted materials within your figure only if you have obtained permission to do so. There is no need for a permission statement for material that can be found in the public domain or with an open license like Creative Commons. If you want to use other authors' figures, contact the copyright holder/s and obtain permission unless the figure falls into the public domain or is licensed under Creative Commons or, in case of publishing your postgraduate work, follow the guidelines provided by your institution.
