Fees for Registration

The fee for registering a vehicle differs depending on whether it is a car, motorcycle, trailer, truck, or boat, as well as whether the registration is for a period of six or twelve months.

What is the total price for my registration?

To ensure that the price you are quoted is accurate, make sure that you know:

• whether the registration is brand new or a renewal.
• the classification of the motor vehicle you intend to register, such as a passenger car, motorcycle, or light commercial vehicle.
• the technical specifications of the vehicle, such as the number of cylinders (in the case of light vehicles) or the number of axles (in the case of heavy vehicles)
• if you meet the requirements to qualify for a registration exemption
• if you are going to include CTP insurance in the quote, the name of your CTP insurance provider.
• You will be required to pay an additional fee in the event that you choose to renew your registration for a period of time that is shorter than 12 months.

The supplemental fee is used to cover the costs of maintaining the vehicle register as well as those associated with the production and distribution of additional notices of registration.

The fees that you pay when you register your vehicle go toward the construction of new roads and the maintenance of the existing road network.

There are three components that make up the total cost of your registration:

• the cost of the registration
• the fee for the improvement of traffic
• premium for compulsory third party insurance (also known as CTP).

The registration and traffic improvement fee contributes to the construction and maintenance of roads, while the CTP insurance premium covers the cost of CTP insurance for the registration of a vehicle.

You will receive in the mail a registration notice when your current registration is about to expire. This notice will provide information on costs as well as instructions on how to renew your registration.

If you fail to ensure that your registration is renewed on or before the due date, the vehicle will lose its ability to be driven legally and a fee will be assessed for the late payment.

Charges for initial enrollment

The Motor Accident Insurance Commission is in charge of regulating the Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance premiums, which are reviewed on a quarterly basis. These premiums are collected along with the registration fee.

Additional costs associated with registering

It's possible that there are additional fees associated with registering your vehicle.

Other fees include a charge for moving an unregistered vehicle, trailer, or caravan as well as a fee for making a late payment. There is also a charge for transferring a vehicle or plate, which includes paying for number plates and accessory plates.
