ANZCA

After graduating from medical school, you are required to have worked in a general hospital for a minimum of two years before you are eligible to submit an application to become a specialist anesthetist. This can include spending up to a year working in intensive care or anesthesia, but the overarching goal is to ensure that the individual has a strong foundation in general medicine and in fields other than anesthesia. The anaesthesia residency training program offered by the ANZCA lasts for a total of five years: the first two years are spent on introductory and basic training, the next two years are spent on advanced training, and the final year is spent on provisional fellowship training.

Put in an application to be a part of the training program.

The application and registration processes for trainees each consist of two stages, and these stages can be completed in any order or even simultaneously.

1. Fill Out an Application

You are eligible to apply for a position with the college if you have at least 52 weeks of postgraduate education and training (PMET) under your belt. If you become an applicant, you will have access to a variety of college resources, such as the ANZCA website, the library, college communications, and many more. TPS is not available to applicants at this time. You are eligible to become an applicant right now and gain access to our resources even before you begin your training if you have a training position that will begin the following year, on or before the hospital employment year.

Become an applicant

The second step is to sign up for training.

You will be able to register with the college as a trainee once you have found a position to receive training at. Please be aware that access to the TPS will begin on the first day of your training.

Procedures for selection as well as rotations in training

Trainees are not selected by us; rather, the employer makes that decision. In order to participate in the program, you will need to find a position in a rotation or training site that has been approved. Please refer to the following for information on your jurisdiction:

There is only one selection process used in the ACT for registrar positions that are available on the Rotational Training scheme.

Every year in July, advertisements for open positions are posted on the website of ACT Health, with the start date set for January of the following year. In the event that positions become vacant in the middle of the year, advertisements for those positions will be posted in May, and the new hires will start in August of the same year. Interviews for choosing candidates typically take place in the beginning of September (or July, depending on whether or not a mid-year intake is applicable), unless otherwise specified.

Applicants need to either be citizens of Australia or have permanent residency status (this also applies to citizens and permanent residents of New Zealand), or they need to have an Australian working visa and current experience working as a medical practitioner in Australia.

Please get in touch with us if you have any questions regarding the ACT rotational training scheme.

You must submit your application directly to the New South Wales (NSW) Ministry of Health in order to be considered for training positions in New South Wales (NSW). The website of the New South Wales Ministry of Health contains both the application form and the recruitment dates for the following year.

In order to find a position for which you can receive training in New Zealand, you should get in touch with the Rotational Supervisor for the region in which you are interested in receiving training. In New Zealand, there are a total of four different training programs:

Northern Scheme1

Midland Scheme1
Central Scheme1
The Southern Method

The rotational supervisors will be able to provide information regarding the timing and locations of hospital job fairs.

There are four recognized rotations in the state of Queensland. The Queensland Anaesthetic Rotational Training Scheme (QARTS, pronounced "quartz") is in charge of supervising these rotations.

QARTS is a sponsored body that offers guidance to employing organizations and oversees the selection and placement of training registrars in anaesthesia across the state of Queensland. This is done in collaboration with Queensland Health and the Directors of Anaesthesia Group in accredited training hospitals. QARTS is a body that provides advice to employing organizations.

The QLD Health RMO Campaign is where applicants for QARTS submit their applications.

Please refer to the QARTS page on the Queensland Health website for further information regarding the application process, recruitment schedules, and eligibility requirements.

SANTRATS stands for the South Australia and Northern Territory Rotational Training Scheme. It is an all-encompassing anaesthesia training program that allows participants to rotate through a number of hospitals in both South Australia and the Northern Territory.

The rotational supervisors are in charge of SANTRATS, with assistance coming from the directors of anesthesia and the South Australia and Northern Territory regional committee of ANZCA. The directors of departments within the scheme are the ones who make the appointments and hire the trainees, and they do so on the basis of recommendations.

There are two intakes each year: one for the beginning of the hospital employment year/new year (applications open in June/July) and one for the middle of the year (applications open in March/April). On the SA Health Careers website, these are advertised whenever they become available.

Please visit this link for additional details regarding the application process for SANTRATS.

The Tasmanian Anaesthetics Training Program, also known as TATP, is a comprehensive anaesthetic training program that provides training at all three hospitals that are operated by the Tasmanian Health Service (THS). The annual recruitment for TATP positions will be advertised on the job openings page of our website as well as the jobs website for THS.

A few advantages of using TATP are as follows:

  • Comprehensive education program offered each week to all trainees, including a biweekly primary teaching session held statewide and broadcast live via videoconference and attended by all basic trainees.
  • Recent examination results have been excellent, including winners of the Cecil Grey Prize in the fellowship examination in 2012 and 2016 and winners of the Renton Prize in the primary examination in 2014, 2015, and 2017 respectively.
  • A culture that is becoming more research-oriented and clinically audited
  • Detection of trainees who have an interest in rural settings and the establishment of rural anesthesia training programs

There are four different rotational training schemes in the state of Victoria. These schemes are North Western, Eastern, Monash, and the Victorian Regional Training Network (VRTN). The Victorian Anaesthesia Training Scheme (VATS) is comprised of these components taken together. The Victorian Anaesthesia Training Committee, or VATC for short, is the organization in charge of the centralized application process for the four different rotational training programs in the state of Victoria. Additionally, it serves as a forum for the making of joint decisions. At the VATC, there is a representative from each program, as well as the Victorian Regional Committee and the Victorian Trainee Committee.

In order to facilitate entry into the various rotational training programs, the VATC manages a centralized application process. There is information and a calendar available here.

Applicants are required to provide the necessary information, attach a curriculum vitae, and list three references. Each program is responsible for conducting its own round of candidate shortlisting and interviews.

Applicants who have been selected for an interview for more than one program are required to fill out a preference form that can be found online.

The Western Australian Anaesthetic Rotational Training Program is a program that is run on behalf of all of the WA anaesthesia training hospitals for trainees who are in their first and second years of introductory training, basic training, and advanced training respectively in the state of Western Australia. Hospital placements are assigned to students in order to facilitate the completion of ANZCA training requirements in both the fundamental units and the specialized study units. A variety of resources, such as exam preparation classes, are made available to trainees throughout the duration of the training program. We are only running one advertisement for all of the available registrar jobs on the program.

On the MedJobsWA website, job postings are made available for viewing every June of each year. The interviews, simulations, and presentations for the candidates who have been shortlisted will take place between the end of August and the beginning of September.

If you have worked in anesthesia or a field that is closely related to it in the past, you might be able to count some of those previous experiences toward the completion of your training. Once you have been accepted into the trainee program, you are eligible to submit an application for recognition of prior learning (RPL). You will be exempt from certain aspects of the ANZCA Training Program if your prior learning is recognized, and this will save you time and money. Please refer to the ANZCA Handbook for training for information regarding the possible training credits you may receive.
In order to apply for RPL, please fill out the application form and send it back to us along with any supporting documentation.

When applying, you should have a conversation about RPL with your current training supervisor and think about the following:
