Revamp Your Bedding Game: A Comprehensive Guide to Washing Your Doona from Manchester Collection Blog
There's nothing quite like the feeling of slipping into a freshly cleaned bed. As the spring season rolls in, many of us like to give our bulky quilts or doonas a good wash and store them away clean for the next winter season. While doona covers are easy to clean and require a weekly wash, cleaning the actual doona itself can be a daunting task. However, it's a task that can improve our sleep quality, prevent allergies, and protect us from skin sensitivities caused by the build-up of dust mites and dead skin cells over time. So, let's dive into some simple advice on how to properly wash your doona.
Check Instructions Before Washing
Before you begin washing your doona, make sure to check the instructions on the tag. If it says "dry clean only," it's best to take it to a professional dry cleaner. However, if it's suitable for machine washing, use the delicate or gentle cycle with cool water, and take note of the fabric and filling. While cotton and polyester doonas are durable and can be washed at home, it's best to take doonas made of wool or silk to the dry cleaners.
Use an Appropriate Washing Machine
If you have a domestic-sized washing machine, you can wash small doonas at home. However, larger doonas may not fit, so if you have an 8-10kg washing machine at home, you should be covered. Make sure there's enough room for the doona, laundry detergent, and water to move around freely.
Opt for Line Drying
Dreading the possibility of your doona shrinking to the size of a table napkin in the dryer? No need to worry. Line drying is the safest method. Before hanging it out to dry, give it a good shake to distribute the filling evenly. If you have to use a dryer, choose a low temperature setting.
No Washing Machine? No Problem!
If washing your doona in a washing machine isn't an option, you can soak it in your bathtub. Fill it up with warm water and add mild laundry detergent. You'll be amazed at how dirty the water gets! Gently stamp it to encourage the detergent to distribute evenly, and then rinse it thoroughly. Remove as much excess water as possible by gently rolling it up.
Storage Tips
After cleaning your doona, you want to keep it in perfect condition during storage, too. Store it in a cool, dry place and avoid any exposure to moisture and light. Linen or canvas storage bags work well because they allow the doona to breathe, but try to avoid plastic storage bags as they restrict air circulation.
